prepare to be dazzled

I know what you’re thinking: “Glazed carrots? What is this, 1994?” Ha! Let me just stop you right there. Seriously, just stop. Forget everything you think you know about glazed carrots – all the horribly mushy, overly sweet, vapid memories and preconceptions you have, purge them now and prepare to be dazzled!

Most of your bad memories of glazed carrots stem from how they’re cooked. When you boil carrots, they absorb so much water that they basically turn to mush. No matter how much you try to season them, they’ve become so waterlogged that they can’t take in much flavor, and end up tasting a lot like the carrots served up in your high school cafeteria. Sauté them in a pan, however, and they cook to perfection while taking on all the luscious flavors you throw at them.

Now, a word about sweetness. The glazed carrots of yesteryear relied heavily on sugar to impart a confectionary quality, which resulted in them being cloyingly sweet and eclipsing any other flavors at work. Using honey, as I did here, or other natural sweeteners such as maple syrup or agave nectar adds unique flavor and sweetness without going overboard. Plus, caramelized honey is just WAY too good to pass up!

What I love best about these glazed carrots is their depth of flavor. Don’t get me wrong, caramelized honey is all kinds of awesome, but we’re adults, right? We need a bit more than just sweetness to get us going. The star anise, cinnamon, and thyme does just that. I’ll admit, I was a little skeptical about the star anise because I’m not a huge licorice fan, but it turned out to be only gently present, tempered by the savory thyme and spicy cinnamon. Even my parents, who aren’t big carrot fans, gobbled these up. Welcome to Glazed Carrots 2.0, the only carrot recipe you’ll ever need!

I remembered to record

One Sunday past, when the outside was still orange with autumn and not as naked as it is today, a little promise was kept. Remember that promise of music? The promise of music that I could see in the far distance when a piano edged in through our doorway, and Chotto-ma had her first music lesson LED Bulbs?

Well, on Sunday I was stretched out on the sofa between a doze and a dream, and D was sitting on the armchair with his feet on the coffee table, when Chotto-ma brought him his guitar. She wanted him to play it while she played the piano. Then she sat down on the black stool as she does, feet dangling, back straight, fingers curved on keys. And she played. D followed her lead, and she took him into the tune she’d been hearing in her head.

It took me a while to realise something special was happening. My ears had been expecting a playful plonking of one of her lessons, but her book of notes was closed, and what I was hearing was her first little composition, her own tune. As one note followed another, I sat up. D looked at me, grinning, still guitaring along. Midway through their session, I remembered to record business loan.

It’s quite something to hear your child make their first music. Somewhere between magic and a punch in the plexus. Who knew? OK, OK, you even cry a little. And then you try to play cool. You also kiss her and eat her up; for which you never need much reason anyway.

And then, with her little tune playing in your head, you go into the kitchen, to bake something you’ve haven’t baked before. But you figure, her first tune deserves your first apple crumble. So the three of you chop up some apples, tickle some flour, find the cinnamon, sprinkle the sugar and have the house smelling like November.

So here it is: Chotto-ma’s first composition for you to listen to, and an apple crumble for after. The composition’s called ‘Sunday morning’ because it’s what our Sunday morning sounds like dc motor gear.

Butter Chicken, oh how I covet thee , explosive in flavour, so rich, so typically ordered en masse in every Indian restaurant. I never ate butter chicken when I was travelling in India for 6 months, oddly enough. I’m sure it was on the menu but there were too many other wondrous items to choose from. Why get something I could get in any Indian restaurant, anywhere in the world? Murgh Makhani is this hindi translation for butter chicken, popular in the Punjab reason as most makhani (butter) dishes are .

Nowadays I cook it all the time. People love butter chicken, this is fact. Even the pickiest non-spice lover typically enjoys this Indian dish i.e. my dad. The transition of the classic dish to it’s paleo embodiment was quite simple. A few changes, like using rich full fat coconut milk instead of cream , and ghee instead of butter. Served with cauliflower “rice” if we’re going full throttle on the paleo bus. Though there are an emerging number of paleo folks incorporating white rice into their diets. Russ Crandall over at The Domestic Man blog points out well that white basmati rice has a low-glycemic index compared to short grain. White rice is also low in the phytate nutrient blockers that many other grains contain, even lower than many paleo friendly foods like walnuts and coconut! Though of course the nutrients aren’t even comparable, we don’t have to feel guilty about noshing our curries with rice. Check out his basmati rice recipe and the full article here

Well friends, here you have it, hope you love every bite.

room left for imagination

Having now spent nearly two weeks, collectively, at The Greenbrier photographing for the Bocuse d’Or USA Foundation, I have learned one thing: at The Greenbrier, anything is possible nuskin.

On my first visit in July, the executive chef, Richard Rosendale (who will be the United States’ competitor in the upcoming Bocuse d’Or competition in Lyon, France in January), told me about a freak storm that blew through the Allegheny mountains, where the resort resides, right before the annual Greenbrier Classic PGA tournament this summer. Multi-story grandstands were flattened, two-hundred year-old oak trees were uprooted, and the tri-state region was left without electricity for days – in some parts, weeks. The PGA authorized the resort to cancel the event. But The Greenbrier carried on.

With the help of residents of the surrounding area – most of whom already work for the resort, but also many who pitched in for free – within forty-eight hours, the courses were cleared, the grandstands resurrected, and Rosendale and his team reorganized all of the food services, relocating to the famous underground Bunker, where there was a generator.

The tournament was mounted (with a $6.1 million purse). Toby Keith, The Fray, and Bon Jovi all played. Thousands came and went Dream beauty pro hard sell

After dining at Eleven Madison Park, which recently replaced its $125 prix-fixe menu with a $195 tasting menu focusing on New York-themed dishes, Pete Wells, the restaurant critic for the New York Times, tossed a roll of caution tape in the restaurant’s direction. While reminding readers that Daniel Humm is a very talented chef – one of the best in New York – he also noted that, in the dining room, there’s too much explaining, and not enough room left for imagination.

“Sense memories are most effective when you’re allowed to discover them yourself. If Proust had been served his madeleine at Eleven Madison Park, food writing would have been deprived of its favorite metaphor Backup and Recovery.”

the famous Dred Scott case

As a boy raised on the prairie plains of a Midwestern border state eating fried chicken and barbecue, I like to think that I have a particularly close kinship to Southerners. Whether it’s true or not, there is something about my Missouri upbringing that makes me feel more Southern than my friends in Kansas, or Illinois, or Ohio. Because Southerness, just like Midwesterness, is defined by culture, not geography Maggie Beauty.

Food, family, politics, and religion certainly have something to do with it. And so does our shared understanding of some of the darker moments of our nation’s past. Missouri, after all, is the only Midwestern state (and the only state outside of the recognized South – other than Texas and Florida, depending on who you are) that was a slave state. You’ll remember that the eponymous compromise that brought Missouri and Maine into the Union on opposite sides of the slave divide later gave rise to the famous Dred Scott case Maggie Beauty.

But maybe some of my Southerness is more accurately attributable to my Asian upbringing (both of my parents are Chinese immigrants). The similarities between the two cultures – the American South and Asia – are striking. We mind our mamas and our elders, and never dare sass back. Guests of the house and home are considered family. Strangers become aunts and uncles. And food and drink are always available.

So, Southern culture comes naturally to me as an adult. It comforts me with its familiarity and charms me with its timelessness Maggie Beauty.

Opportunities and challenges

First, I would like to know, what does your destiny offer you? Happiness, wisdom, a strong body or something else. If I had asked this question to president Nixon, he would probably had said, “Our destiny offers not the cup of despair, but the chalice(酒杯) of opportunity Baby Gym
."

Needless to say, one of the biggest opportunities given to China is the 2008 Olympic Games. Till now, we have used two sevenths of the preparation time. How much changes have you seen? New roads, new subway lines, public-exercising equipments with beautiful colors, large blocks of grass fields, and also lots of modern gyms which are under construction.

Other than those, there are even more good effects brought to us by the Olympic Games that cannot be seen directly. For example, more and more people will get to know China. I’m sure the mysterious Chinese culture will attract them strongly. And the games will also do good to the economy and environment, for it is gaining the attention of foreign investors and the awareness of environmental protection is being strengthened. What is more, Olympic Games give a unique opportunity to inspire and educate a new generation of Chinese youth with the Olympic values and the Olympic spirit. Now that we have seen so many advances, could you even imagine us losing the holding rights reenex?

I’ve already said a lot about the Olympics and China. But I think everyone should use some time to think of this question, “Does the Olympic Games have any special meaning to you?"

For us, I mean the Chinese youth, 2008 Olympic Games is a tremendous gift. Because what we are waiting for is to do something significant as repaying the love given to us. The society is just like a ship, and in our dreams the captain is waving his hand and saying “Hey! Come here and take the helm(把舵)!" How charming his voice is, but we have never heard of it in our true life. This morning, however, when we wake up, we will see the Olympic Games waving its hand. After chewing, most of us will have at least one plan about what to do for the Olympic Games. And mine is to be a “comforter" — that is someone who will give comfort to others.

At the end of my speech, I hope all the preparation will go well, and everyone will show their ability to the world. Let us seize opportunities and give a big smile to challenges iphone bumper.

Mini Cranberry Chocolate Upside-Down Cakes

I hope you have enjoyed the holiday cookie baking spree I’ve been having lately. I’m moving on to other things, although I still have some cookies to share with you this season. But, today, we move on to something else synonymous with holiday baking – cranberriesSculptra!

Specifically, we’re talking cranberries, white chocolate, and chocolate chips baked into tiny upside-down cakes. All of that chocolate makes them sweet, and the cranberries offer both sweet and tart. And don’t you just love mini dessertsHong Kong florist delivery

You may remember that earlier this year I spent some time in Nashville at the Southern Baking Retreat, thanks to Martha White and White Lily. Since that wonderful trip, I’ve talked a lot about all the biscuits we baked. But, one of the other fun things we did was come up with ways to use Martha White muffin mixes in creative ways.

These little cakes use chocolate chip muffin mix as a shortcut ingredient. It makes mixing these up so quick and easy. And, the combination of flavors is simply delicious. On top of all that, these look so elegant on a dessert traysmall space solutions.

Caramel Popcorn Shortbread Brownies

My desire to bake caramel desserts increases exponentially with the arrival of fall desktop organizers. Sure, I love caramel all year, but there’s just something about it that makes it go hand in hand with cool, crisp days. Of course, caramel and chocolate are great friends, too. Having made many versions of caramel brownies, I wanted to do something just a bit different. Recently, Werther’s sent me a sampling of their new Werther’s Original? Baking Caramels and Werther’s Original? Caramel Popcorn, so I’ve had plenty of caramel to keep me busy with recipe ideas. I decided quickly that I needed to make good use of the popcorn to prevent us from just eating it all straight from the bag Flower delivery Hong Kong. I started with the idea of a shortbread crust topped with caramel and brownies. But, for a fun twist, I added some of that caramel popcorn to the crust. The popcorn gives an otherwise traditional crust a little sweetness and a great flavor twist without being overwhelming. The crust is topped with a simple caramel layer made from just two ingredients. Then, a rich brownie is baked on top of that. I know, right? These brownies mean business.
